#544 Gerhard

Dino's Cafe

At last month’s Toronto Comicon, Koom got a chance to sit down with Gerhard, most famous for drawing backgrounds and environments for (and NOT inking!) Dave Sim’s Cerebus. Koom talks with him about working with Dave Sim and navigating some of Sim’s more controversial moments; the ergonomics of comics creation; working with Grant Morrison on “Smile of the Absent Cat” in Heavy Metal; and more.

I had a really enjoyable time interviewing master draughtsman and illustrator Gerhard at the Comicon. He also added a background to a Brian Bolland head sketch (I bought online from some guy named Jim) for me while we talked. The first photo is the Bolland head sketch and the others are of Gerhard’s addition. — Koom

  1. Great to hear Gerhard in an interview! He’s one of the greats. It sounds like there is more to the Cerebus buy-out story, but he kept it classy and professional. Him and Dave continue to be huge influences for me in my own work.
